Haus in Feldmeilen | House in Feldmeilen
Schwabachstrasse, Feldmeilen

The existing house on the Schwabachstrasse 51 is a former winemaker house built in 1736 and part of a group of similar houses in the centre of Feldmeilen. The house is an important contemporary witness in the context of a group of old buildings on the, partly very steep, Schwabachstrasse. Therefore it is highly important to the townscape and its history. The aim of the project is to present a replacement building which comes up to the value of the former building and the sensitive and typical setting.
The challenge of this task showed in the requirement of fitting four apartments in the size of 110 – 200 m2 in the already existing volume of the old house. It is to say that this is impossible – although the new building does come close to the initial position in set and scale. Crucial in the present project is the commitment to typological elements, which characterize the place and anchor the building in the context.
- The division into a main and an adjacent house is kept
- The new house is in its proportions related to the old house
- The ridge is parallel to the hillside, which is the distinctiveness of the building
- The brick roof does not have any skylights
- The roof is less steep in the bottom third
- Cullises and window frames are redly coloured
- The entrance stays at the same place as before
The house communicates with the other ancient buildings that persist in the Schwabachstrasse in scale, materialisation, colour and centre punch. It is a contribution to the area because it links the new with the still existing identity of the location. The house also offers generous and bright apartments in an elevated standard, which provide the habitants with every contemporary comfort. It stands calmly solid and naturally in the fruit and vegetable garden and on the ascending road.
The entrance is on the ground floor and leads to the garden hall, which ensure also an at grade access to the garage. The four apartments of the adjacent building possess each an exterior lounge area with view of the lake and reference to the garden. Two graded garden areas frame the façade on the west and expand the living area of the apartments in the first floor in summer. The flats of the second floor hold towards south-west and west intimate balconies, which sub-divide the living and eating areas impressively.
